Container ship collision leads to collapse of major Baltimore bridge, leaving 6 individuals missing

Early Tuesday, a significant event unfolded as a large container ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, resulting in its collapse. According to Paul Wiedefeld, Maryland’s transportation secretary, six individuals were reported missing following the incident, with two individuals rescued, one of whom was taken to a trauma center in serious condition. The missing individuals are suspected to have fallen into the water.

Situated southeast of the Baltimore metropolitan area, the Francis Scott Key Bridge serves as a vital link for Interstate 695 across the Patapsco River.

The collision between the container ship and the bridge occurred around 1:30 a.m. ET, during ongoing bridge maintenance work, as per Wiedefeld. Those missing are believed to be part of the construction crew tasked with repairing potholes on the bridge.

Wiedefeld emphasized that active search and rescue efforts are underway, leading to the suspension of vessel traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore until further notice.

"This is a very large incident, it involves a very large footprint," stated Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James W. Wallace during a press briefing.

In response to the collapse, the National Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation, as confirmed by a spokesperson speaking to CNBC.
