Carol Burnett Reflects on 'Terrible' Experience Appearing with Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show: 'He Was Incredibly Kind

Carol Burnett shares insights into her experiences on The Ed Sullivan Show alongside Elvis Presley during her recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Reflecting on her numerous appearances on the iconic show, where luminaries like Presley and The Beatles also graced the stage, the 90-year-old actress reminisced about the time she shared with the legendary singer.

"I was on when Elvis was in the army," Burnett recalled, describing a grand spectacle that unfolded on stage during Presley's military service. She chuckled as she mentioned being placed first on the bill, feeling overshadowed by the anticipation for Elvis's appearance. "Nobody wanted to see me. I mean, it was Elvis, 'Where the hell is Elvis?'"

Admitting that her performance didn't quite hit the mark, Burnett candidly admitted, "I bombed. It was awful."

Colbert then inquired if she had the chance to interact with Presley, to which Burnett warmly responded, "Yes, I met him. He was very sweet, and I even got his autograph for my kid sister."

The conversation veered toward Burnett's comedic song about John Foster Dulles, the former secretary of state. Recalling Dulles's famously reserved demeanor, Burnett explained the genesis of the song, revealing it as a humorous response to the frenzy surrounding Elvis. She recounted performing the song initially on The Jack Paar Show and then again due to a request from Dulles's press advisor, who had missed the first performance.

In a humorous twist, Burnett shared a memorable anecdote where Dulles was questioned about the song during an appearance on Meet The Press, to which he replied with characteristic diplomacy, "I make it a policy never to discuss matters of the heart in public."
